Course Overview: 

Interested to try debating for your child this December holidays? RedDot's Holiday Debate Camp let's you learn foundational concepts, ideas and topics under the guidance of our knowledgeable coaches. Students from all levels of debating knowledge can join in to learn about age-appropriate topics, as well as develop their individual critical thinking and argumentation skills.


Course Objectives:

  1. Understanding the basics of debate: Students should be able to define debate, understand the structure of a debate, and identify the roles of each speaker.
  2. Building critical thinking skills: Students should be able to analyse arguments and evidence presented in a debate and develop their own arguments and counterarguments.
  3. Developing communication skills: Students should be able to effectively articulate their ideas and listen to others' perspectives. They should also be able to use appropriate body language and tone of voice during a debate.
  4. Building confidence: Students should be able to express their opinions and ideas with confidence, even in front of an audience.

Day 2: Building Debate Skills (4 hours)

Day 3: Advanced Debate Skills and Final Debates (4 hours)

  • Review and Feedback
  • Logical Fallacies
  • Rebuttal Techniques
  • Public Speaking Confidence
  • Final Debates
  • Awards and Certificates


Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Knowledge and Understanding: Develop a foundational understanding of debate concepts, structure, and terminology.
  2. Critical Thinking and Argumentation: Enhance critical thinking skills for analysing, constructing, and countering arguments.
  3. Communication Skills: Improve public speaking, persuasive language, and effective communication abilities.
  4. Teamwork and Collaboration: Gain an appreciation for teamwork, cooperation, and the ability to work collaboratively within debate teams.
  5. Practical Application and Self-Reflection: Apply learned skills in practical debate scenarios and develop the capacity for self-reflection and constructive evaluation.


Teaching Methods:

Classes will be conducted through coaching, facilitation to encourage group discussions and dialogue. Students would be encouraged to express and communicate their thoughts and ideas.


Prerequisites:

No prior experience needed in debating.


Assessment Methods:

Coaches will evaluate students through quizzes, practice debate matches as well as through the student's communication and their ability to express themselves.


Required Materials: 

Worksheets will be provided, students will need to bring their own writing materials.
