Beginner (Module 1A): Piece Mechanics & First Game of Chess! (4 to 6 year olds)

Course Overview:

Introduce your child to the fascinating world of chess with our unique, story-based program! In Chesslandia, children will follow memorable characters as they learn the game in a fun and engaging way. This approach helps them become confident chess players while developing critical thinking, strategy, and problem-solving skills.

Course Content:

Students learn how each chess piece moves, one captivating story at a time, so they can recall the rules and play with enthusiasm. For older beginners, we also introduce chess heuristics like danger squares, and check/checkmate so as to empower them to play a simple game of chess by the end of term. 

Learning Outcomes:

• Introduction to chess and its basic rules through engaging storytelling
• Understanding how each chess piece moves and interacts on the board
• Grasping foundational concepts such as check, checkmate, and danger squares
• Building critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Play a simple game of chess using all pieces correctly (3 to 4 yrs); including gameplay competence (4 to 6 yrs) 
• Engage in friendly matches with peers to enhance teamwork and self-esteem.

Teaching Methods:

We combine storytelling, art, and hands-on activities to create an engaging learning environment. Children will explore their strengths in a supportive setting that encourages enthusiastic learning.

Prerequisites

• Module 1A (Equiv to Holiday Camp "Beginner Chess: Fun from Square One!")- no prerequisites, suitable for complete new beginners (3yo to 6yo).

Subsequent Modules

• Module 1B - no prerequisites, suitable for complete new beginners (3yo to 6yo).
• Module 2 (Equiv to "Advanced Beginner Chess: The Checkmate Challenge" - no prerequisites, suitable for complete beginners (6yo and above).
• Module 2B - suitable for players familiar with piece mechanics.
• Module 3 (Equiv to "Secret Missions Camps: Strategy Starts Here!")- suitable for players familiar with checkmate.
• Module 4 (Equiv to "Math of Chess Camp")- suitable for players familiar with checkmate, controlling the centre of the board (opening strategy) & castling.
• Module 5 (Equiv to "CHESS VARIANTS CAMP: WHERE STRATEGY MEETS ADVENTURE!")- suitable for players familiar with basic strategy or tactics and able to do piece valuation.
• Module 6 (Equiv to "Chess Master Camp")- suitable for players who are familiar with strategy or tactics and piece valuation. They can identify checkmate patterns and understand end-game strategies.
• Stars - suitable for players familiar with Notation (6yo and above).

Assessment Methods:

• Ongoing evaluation by coaches throughout the course
• Enrollment for subsequent courses is guided by the tutor’s recommendation

Required Materials: 

Water bottle and a ready mindset to play chess!

Important Notes: 

• Please ensure punctuality so your child doesn’t miss the start of the adventure.
• Parents will also receive a term report by the end of the term.

What is the difference between Module 1A and 1B?

Enrollment is guided by the tutor’s recommendation. Module 1A is tailored for complete beginners with no prior chess knowledge, while Module 1B focuses on reinforcing skills for students who have a basic understanding of the game.
